Introduction A 20–year-girl was brutally assaulted and molested by a mob on the night of July 9, 2012, outside a pub on a busy road in Guwahati, capital city of the northeastern Indian state of Asom . Sixteen youths were accused of being involved in the heinous incident that lasted for over 40 minutes. The entire incident was captured on video by a local news channel. The crew who recorded the incident were severly criticized by human rights associations for not having attempted to rescue the girl from the mob though they were present on the scene. Some quarters even accused the crew of instigating the mob. The management of the news channel, however, backed the crew, saying they had discharged their primary responsibilities as journalists and provided the strongest possible evidence against the accused.
